In collaboration with Conservation Ontario, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has secured funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities Program to complete a pilot project to develop a Coastal Resilience Management Plan for Lake Superior within LRCA’s area of jurisdiction.
The purpose of this Project is to develop current Lake Superior shoreline flooding, erosion and dynamic beach hazard mapping within LRCA’s area of jurisdiction and additionally assess and map the hazards based on projected climate change impacts. A key priority will be to understand current and future risks due to the natural hazards and develop adaptive short- and long-term actions that impacted municipalities can use to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the potential impacts of climate change. Where applicable, a plan of retreat will be developed for at risk community assets, housing or infrastructure, which can be used by the respective municipality in their long-term planning. This will protect people and property as well reduce the economic impact of climate change impacts to municipal and private infrastructure.
